Classic Aero-TV: The Life and Afterlife of the B1B Lancer
Sat, Feb 21,2026 07:44:05PM EST
From 2023 (YouTube Edition): A Bone to Chew Envisioned in the 1960s as a platform that would combine the Mach 2 speed of Convair’s sexy but temperamental B-58 Hustler with the range and payload of Boeing’s rock-steady B-52 Stratofortress, Rockwell’s B-1 Lancer was meant to ultimately replace both aircraft. Following a long series of studies, Rockwell International (now part of Boeing) prevailed—besting Boeing, General Dynamics, and North American—in the U.S. Air Force’s Advanced Manned Strategic Aircraft (AMSA) design contest, submitting a concept that would, years later, emerge into the Cold War world as the B-1A.

Also: Blended-Wing Aircraft, Free Pilot’s Guide To Airspace, F16 Pilots Earn DFC, Mardi Gras TFR A lack of coordination between the Defense Department and the FAA over the military’s use of a high-energy, counter-drone laser led to the FAA shutting down the El Paso airspace. Military activity and the use of the counter-drone laser raised immediate concerns by the FAA for civilian traffic arriving and departing El Paso International Airport. Fort Bliss and its airfield, Biggs Army Airfield, sit just north of the commercial airport, which serves about 100 flights each day. A Wizz Air flight headed to Tel Aviv’s Ben-Gurion Airport was intercepted by Israeli Air Force fighter jets after a concerning WiFi hotspot name was discovered by the cabin crew. While a full security response was triggered, the event turned out to be nothing more than a kid’s ill-conceived prank. While announcing a new audit of the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City, the DoT IG gave some behind-the-scenes numbers that show how the controller shortage got as bad as it is today: a trainee failure rate of more than 30% in 2024. This has left current controllers working overtime and six-day workweeks to keep the system moving amid growing travel demand. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-Unlimited!!!

NTSB Final Report: Mark O Treidel American Ranger AR-1
Sat, Feb 21,2026 07:43:42PM EST
After Landing, The Pilot Noticed That Rudder Had Been Damaged Due To A Rotor Strike, Which Likely Occurred When The Rotor Flapped During Takeoff Analysis: The pilot stated that it was a very windy day with winds above 20 mph and gusts to 30 mph when he attempted a takeoff in his gyroplane. He stated that during the takeoff roll with the pre-rotor engaged to 130 to140 RPM, he gently eased back on the cyclic and a gust of windcaught the rotors. He felt the rotor flap and then a bump. He immediately arrested the rotor flap and then continued the takeoff roll. When the gyroplane became airborne, he realized there was less rudder authority and returned to land at the departure airport without further incident.

ANN FAQ: How Do I Become A News Spy?
Sat, Feb 21,2026 07:43:39PM EST
We're Everywhere... Thanks To You! Even with the vast resources and incredibly far-reaching scope of the Aero-News Network, every now and then a story that should be reported on slips through our fingers. There's a lot of news out there, and sometimes we just don't get to all of it. Fortunately for us, we realized early on we couldn't be everywhere at once -- curse the laws of physics! -- so we came up with the idea of News-Spies. Just as the title suggests, a News-Spy is a reader who notices a news item -- be it in the newspaper, on television, or something they came across at their own airport, town hall, at the office water cooler or just by walking down the street -- basically, any item a reader may think is newsworthy, that pertains to the world of aviation.

You would think they were going to talk about props, but the topic of this conversation was actually about pilot proficiency. It so happens that Brown is not only responsible for the production of great propellers, he is dedicated to pilots becoming and remaining proficient. This was demonstrated at EAA AirVenture at the Pilot Proficiency Center. The facility was sponsored by Hartzell Propeller, along with many other companies and organizations, and Brown talks about Hartzell’s goals for addressing the vitally important issue of pilot proficiency.

United Aircraft Group’s six-ton R6000 tiltrotor has moved into tethered hover testing at China’s Wuhu Aviation Industrial Park, reportedly in hopes of achieving certification before the end of the year. The design has been around since 2021, with the prototype first taking the stage in 2024. The tiltrotor began its flight test campaign late last year with tethered hovers. Two aviation groups have expressed concerns about the potential cost of aircraft having to replace radio altimeters if the FCC moves forward with a proposed plan to expand certain radio frequencies. NBAA and NATA are urging the FCC to employ its "emerging technologies framework"to Part 91 and Part 135 operators to ensure business aviation safety, equitable cost allocation and the orderly deployment of Upper C-Band wireless services. Authorities confirmed that all four people were lost in the crash and that the NTSB is involved. ADS-B data shows the final recorded position at approximately 00:19 local time near the summit of Emerald Mountain, about 0.8 nautical miles left of the extended centerline and 3 nm south of the threshold for runway 32. Boeing is reportedly hoping to finally get its first production-standard 777X airborne this April. If this schedule holds, the flight could get Boeing back in the long-range widebody competition… only six years behind its intended timeline. The aircraft preparing for flight is built for launch customer Lufthansa and is currently undergoing fuel system testing at Boeing’s Everett facility in Washington. After a blunt GAO report and nearly 20 serious mishaps across the services in about two years, the Marine Corps has confirmed that it is making five major safety updates to its MV-22 Osprey fleet. The changes were outlined in the 2026 Marine Aviation Plan. The GAO put the numbers into perspective, finding that the Marine Corps and Air Force recorded 18 serious, non-combat Osprey accidents in fiscal years 2023 and 2024. Many members said they were upset and angry about the termination and wanted to know why. Charlie Lynch and Dale Klapmeier, presented as the two newest board members, opened their portion of the town hall with their backgrounds as pilots and then took questions. Dale Klapmeier said Pleasance did... "not have what it takes to run an organization like this. NAA has announced the finalists for the 2025 Robert J. Collier Trophy, recognizing the greatest achievements in American aeronautics and astronautics from the past year. A UK drone operator has been hit with 17 convictions after repeatedly flying over an active industrial fire and inside restricted airport airspace, giving him the unfortunate title of Britain’s first (but, at this rate, not last) drone pilot to be charged for interference with emergency response. Also: NASA Selects Vast, FlightSim v RealWorld, USAF Semi-Autonomous Flight, Crew-12 Restocks ISS A bipartisan group of senators and representatives has introduced the Aviation Innovation and Global Competitiveness Act, taking clear aim at the FAA’s below-par aircraft type certification process. This is a long-standing problem that has stirred legislative efforts before to no avail, but lawmakers seem to think this time is different, thanks to Advanced Air Mobility. According to a recent government watchdog report, more than a million commercial drones were operating in the US by the end of last year. The variety of roles these drones can serve has also grown exponentially, allowing them to tackle infrastructure inspections, disaster response, and, most widely foreshadowed, delivery services. The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) provided comments to questions asked by the FAA looking deeper into ADS-B and the possibility of "electronic conspicuity"(EC) devices, an alternative to ADS-B contemplated to aid in collision avoidance between manned aircraft and drones. The EAA provided feedback aimed to support portable (or installed), low-cost, low-power, anonymous "alternate EC"devices intended solely to enhance air-to-air awareness and deconfliction.
